such as deployable barricades to protect your troops from tower fire for a while in the first rank, more barricades and two siege towers in the second rank, and barricades, siege towers, and a siege version of an artillery piece in the last rank. The obvious answer to improve things at least a little bit is to add a blue skill tree option to have the army come with prebuilt siege equipment in sieges.

The Empire fortress maps were a real step forward here, I think, and i'm sure they will be looking at how to make sieges more involved with the next game, but I don't think having walls un-scalable to infantry is the answer I don't think the current sieges are perfect but if you look at it from a balancing point of view it's hard to see what else they could do.

This would change campaign balance drastically. The problem as I see it is that to get anywhere near to what you are looking for you would have to make walled settlements much, much harder to take. The problem then would be that attacking a city would be so much more difficult, it would drastically increase the force multiplier of walls. There are a lot of things that would outright solve this problem: such as having the regular towers on the wall be garrisonable by archers and then having those archers so they can fire in all directions. If you could have raised platforms where archers could stand out of range of enemy melee attacks but then you had to limit it for gameplay reasons what would this look like? Would it mean there were just two of these tall towers on the wall, if so what's stopping the enemy from just avoiding them in deployment? And if the AI wouldn't know to avoid them in deployment it would go down the slippery slope of just taking advantage of the AI's inability to navigate complex wall systems which we are teetering on the brink of now in some maps. If it's too op limit the number of it so you can only have certain amount of missile units deployed in such positions. I think there should be a tower or higher floor on the wall where archers can be stationed while melee troops hold off the enemy.

And players won't even bother assaulting castles without siege units in the first place. It would only delay siege battle for a few turns and you have thr same problem again. It's fiddly but I think the gameplay may be more like what you're looking for. Having to spend time building siege ladders and assigning them to units before a siege would be an answer. I understand the frustration that you can't just have archers on your walls firing at the enemy army while they stand there and try to knock the gates down but I think there has to be some element of balancing otherwise walled cities would be very difficult to attack. But buggy sieges is nothing unique to Warhammer in the total war series.

It's during my first head to head campaign siege battle with well matched armies that I realized sieges are actually quite fun and interesting in WH. Though in your defense, CA did not make a great job of making it clear in siege UI / Tutorials. But claiming that units can just climb over walls "With ease" is just wrong. There's a lot of problems with siege, especially with some areas where missile troops line of sights will have troubles, gates getting stuck open or closed, etc. This is why bringing siege towers is pretty important if you're going to assault a wall. Similar troop quality on the wall should be able to deal with them easily. My archers are not protected from melee units at all.Ī unit that climbs a ladder does so one at a time very slowly (Definitely a good time to move your archers back) and will be exhausted by the time they reach the top (Thus have lower stats in pretty much every aspects).
